Hanging

In the context of chess, a hanging piece (also known by the French term en prise) is both unprotected and attacked.

One of the first good chess habits you should form is to avoid having any hanging pieces.

You should also be on the lookout for pieces which are protected, yet can be captured by a piece of lesser value. Retaliation's no good if you end up at a loss.
