Cassette tape as a data storage format

At a pinch, you can use cassette tape as a data storage format, using the same frequency-shift keying that dialup modems used over the phone.

This was how 8-bit home computers such as the Commodore 64 and ZX Spectrum stored data.

It was also the technique used by other early digital devices, such as some synthesisers (to save their programs) and digital sequencers (to save their music), before the advent of MIDI.
