ISO 9660
ISO 9660 is the standard filesystem of CD-ROMs. Its most stringent level, level 1, is a lowest common denominator, designed to be compatible with even DOS.
The salient points are:
- You can only go up to 8 directories deep
- Directory names can have up to 8 characters, with no extension
- Filenames can have up to 8 characters, plus a single dot and up to 3 more characters for an optional single extension
- Filenames can only contain the following characters: uppercase Basic Latin letters; digits; underscores; and a single dot. Namely:
.0123456789ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ_. The single dot can only be used to separate the filename proper from its extension. Dots cannot be used within filenames, extensions, nor directory names.
To safely fit on a CD-ROM, the volume can be up to 650 MB.
