Motorola 68000 (die shot by Pauli Rautakorpi, CC-BY-3.0)
- Company: Motorola
- Type: Microprocessor
- Address width: 24 bits (can access up to 16 MB of RAM or ROM)
The 68000 was a 16- (internal data bus) and 32-bit (instruction set and registers) microprocessor IC made by Motorola. It was the successor to their 8-bit 6800 chip.
Its contiguous memory addressing was invaluable to Unix derivatives, prompting Intel's engineers to design the 386 specifically to compete with it.[1] As with its predecessors, the 386 was used in IBM PC clones. Meanwhile, the 68000 was used in almost every workstation, home computer, arcade machine, and video game console of the era.
Used in
- Atari ST
- Commodore Amiga
- Sega Mega Drive
