Desktop publishing is, essentially, simplistic typesetting that can be accomplished intuitively using GUI-based personal computer software.

Eventually, word processors evolved to include desktop publishing abilities. While these features are useful for some types of writing, they can be an unwelcome distraction for others.

I contend that at this point, word processors stopped incidentally serving serious writers, as their workflow of combined writing and typesetting was no longer comparable to the format-free focusing offered by typewriters and text editors, which let you quickly write and edit plain text.

In this sense, the evolution of word processors to include desktop publishing features is comparable to the evolution of MIDI sequencers into DAWs. In both cases, it becomes harder to focus on creating something when you're encouraged to simultaneously work on the appearance of what you're creating, rather than completing the distinct tasks one at a time.
