Inkwell

An inkwell is a small, open container of ink. It can be made of any impermeable material, such as glass, pewter, or porcelain.

Ink is poured into the inkwell from a bottle. A quill or dip pen is then habitually dipped into the inkwell, every few sentences or so, to replenish it with ink. A fountain pen user doesn't need an inkwell, as their pen can suck up ink directly from the bottle it came in.

Oldfashioned writing desks have a small, round recess in the back-right corner, to house an inkwell. This prevents it from being knocked over, spilling ink everywhere.
