Modern Age

In the context of US comic, the Modern Age is the current era of darker, longer, slightly more diverse stories.

The era roughly started in 1986, with Batman: The Dark Knight Returns and Watchmen, spanning four and twelve comic book issues respectively. This marked the start of a decades-long shift, from writing mostly single-episode stories to longer arcs, and therefore from selling mostly individual comic books to longer trade paperbacks and graphic novels. These stories are often grittier and less simplistic, intended more for adult readers.

Thanks largely to smaller publishers such as Milestone Comics, stories of this era have also started to include better representation, and more diverse writers and illustrators, at least compared to previous eras.
