Safari
The Safari is a model of fountain pen by Lamy, introduced in the 1980s. It's especially good for fountain pen neophytes.
Firstly, it's affordable, which is not to be overlooked when you're trying something out in a non-committal manner.
Secondly, its design encourages correct use. Most noticeably, its grip is shaped to encourage you to hold it correctly. More subtly, when you load in a new ink cartridge, then screw the pen back together, it automatically pierces the cartridge with just enough pressure.
Other nice details include the windows that show how much ink you have left, and the not-quite-round shape that prevents it from rolling onto the floor.
The only real downside is that it uses a proprietary format ink cartridge. This can be bypassed with an optional converter that lets it work with ink bottles, which are as far away from a proprietary format as you can get.
Overall, it's a pretty safe choice for your first fountain pen, and it's debateable whether you really need a second.
