Zoë Blade's notebook

1571

The 1571 was a 5¼″ floppy disk drive made by Commodore. It's technically compatible with the VIC 20, C64, Plus/4, C16, and C128, although its beige colour scheme complements just the C128 and C64C, and the C128 alone can take advantage of its main feature.[1]

Specifically, unlike the far more popular 1541 and 1541-II drives, when used with the C128 it's double-sided. As a result, any disks you format on it in this mode are incompatible with 1541 drives. (This makes sense, as from the point of view of the disk's underside, the disc is still spinning in the opposite direction while it's being used.) Conversely, it can read regular 1541-formatted disks the same way a 1541 drive can: by manually turning them over when you need to access the B-side.

When used with anything but the C128, it's in effect just a more expensive 1541 drive. If you want something to match a C64C, opt for a 1541-II instead.
