Interposing
Interposing is a chess term. To interpose is to block an opponent's piece with one of your own.
You might do this to neutralise a check, or to prevent your opponent capturing one of your more valuable pieces. Your interposing piece is therefore pinned until you either capture the attacking piece or move your more valuable piece out of the way.
Knights can effectively jump over other pieces, while Kings and attacking Pawns can only move one square at a time. It's therefore only the line pieces whose attacks can be blocked by interposing a piece.
