Douglas Adams
Douglas Adams was the author of the much-beloved series The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
Personally, I recommend just the first two Hitchhiker's novels, which together are wonderfully bookended. I also like the first Dirk Gently novel, which seems much more cohesive compared to Hitchhiker's being made up as he went along. Then again, I'm a programmer and a musician, so Dirk Gently seems oddly specific to my interests.
As with Terry Pratchett, much of the charm of a Douglas Adams novel lies in the narrator's turns of phrase rather than the story itself, making it pretty much impossible to satisfyingly adapt to another medium... even if Hitchhiker's started out as a radio series.
